OP - chances are your pilot is lit by electronic ignition. The sequence is this: 1)When heater calls for more hot water 2) electronic ingniter lights pilot flame. 3) Once heater confirms pilot is lit, 4) gas burner comes on 5) After water is heated, gas burner and pilot flame both go out. 5) restart at 1.
