I would say take it in to a shop and have them check everything and clean it, etc. Since you're not sure how it works, you won't know when you're cleaning it yourself if there is something else going on.
Once you get it checked out, then you can see how it's supposed to work and can read up, check youtube, etc., so you can learn how to problem solve and fix in the future.
