You should sanitize the system (not just the tank) once a year. I do mine twice a year. Once in the spring when dewinterizing and again mid summer before a long trip.
You want to run the bleach solution through anything that sees water flow. Then you can drain and flush the fresh tank. What I do is hookup the city water hose to the city water connection and run the water through the system. The. You are all set. If you have a little bleach smell it won’t harm you.
