Florida

We are taking a trip next year to Orlando to visit a friend. We will then drive to the east coast heading north. Any ideas where to stay or places to visit in Florida. We have been to Daytona and St Augustine. We are heading towards the Smoky Mtns. Thankyou in advance for any ideas!
  • Check out Hanna Park in Jacksonville. One of the few parks with beach access.
  • Not sure what time of the year you are coming, but if you like the beach, I would recommend Gamble Rogers Memoria State Park. There are only 30 sites and they book quick, but you are basically on the water with red sand! Do try Ft Clinch.
  • Do a Google search for `Florida tourism' and read on. Kennedy Space Center comes to mind.
  • Stop and see Ft Clinch SP and Fernandina Beach downtown area. The Okefenokee swamp is primordial North Florida/S GA at it's best.

Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort & Marina is a very nice campground on Hilton Head Island, SC. Beautiful flat beaches and miles of paved bike trials if you like to bike...
  • I'm not normally a fan of KOA, but the one in Kissimmee is exceptional and has activities daily + a wine tasting on Thursday evenings, think it was. Seems like the rate was right at $40 incl the taxes and such. If you're a baseball fan, you're at the right place. Wide World of Sports at Disney is Atlanta Braves and an awesome facility....you'll be in and out faster than you'd believe, they really have a system - FREE parking. White Sox :( are also in FL, just don't know exactly where. Detroit is in Lakeland, Yankees and Phillies are in the Tampa area - a bit of a drive from Orlando, but doable. Remember to allow for spring break traffic anywhere near water. Also, gotta plan ahead and check online regularly for open sales on tickets as they all are usually sell outs. Most open sales are the first or second week in January.

Enroute....if you find yourself heading through Birmingham, prepare for THE WORST bumpy road on I-65 on the south side. The good news, however, is that once you get through there, there is a CW in Calera that has very nice overnight facilities with full hookups, also no charge. Of course, they would be very happy if you did some shopping while you're there, but you can always find something. Last year they had an exceptional deal on propane fill-ups - think it was Wednesday - about 1/2 the going rate elsewhere. Call first to be sure. It's first come, first serve, but very, very nice and the price is right. If you're into wineries, Keel and Curley in Plant City is THE place. If you're into either RC or quilting, PM me and I'll give you the info....best fuel prices to be found are in Orlando and awesome fabric at Orlando and Lakeland stores - gotta look up the name because old people forget things like that. Have a great, safe trip!!
  • What are your interests? There's something for just about everyone here in FL, from eco-tours to lazy beach days to theater and museums.
  • For Orlando, I heartily recommend Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. It's located right in Orlando. Nice quiet park with full hook ups and gated access. It's also dirt cheap. Check out the reviews at RV Park Reviews.
