I wonder if the the low grawr on the OPs truck is because the 2.7 eb is not designed for heavy towing duties? I viewed that engine option for folks who want a pickup, but don't plan on towing or hauling anything heavy. More like the maximum fuel mileage option?
It has great torque and hp numbers for a 2.7l v6, but as others said, the low payload figure is the issue. OP, unfortunately i do think you should try to find a lighter weight option.
The thing to consider about being overweight is if you'd get into an accident, a plantiff attorney will figure that out and fully exploit the fact that you were knowingly overweight.
No your rear axle won't fall out or pop your tires, but things will wear out faster and be more failure prone.
