I used to replace head gaskets , front oil seal , rear main seal, and oil pan gasket on the old 6.9 and 7.3 in about 7 hours , the book paid 26 to do it but it only took 45 min to pull the engine, about 4.5 hours to repair it and about 1.5 to put it back and have it running, there was a triangular cover on the injection pump that you could take off and turn the pump up some, a 6.9 with a 7.3 pump turned up a little would really come to life, especially if you advanced the timing about the width of the mark , a good free flowing exhaust would also help
