My grandpa had a Ford 6.9 and my girlfriend's family had a Chevy Suburban w/ the 6.2 when I was in high school; I drove both of the vehicles quite often. My grandparents towed a small 5'er w/ the 6.9, and did so very slowly.
The 6.2 did get quite good mileage, though. I remember driving it from Oregon to Utah on a single 40 gal tank of fuel, averaging a little over 22 mpg for the trip, which was about 10 mpg more than my family's Suburban got!
Anyway, those 2 diesels, plus the diesel VW Rabbit my grandpa also allowed me to drive, really made me not a fan of diesels in my 'formative years.' Grandpa was a big diesel fan, but I didn't get it (he never let me drive his Mercedes 300D, so I don't know how that one did). It wasn't until he traded the Ford in on a Dodge w/ Cummins turbodiesel in the late 90's that I started to see the light.
