You guys really make me feel old.I bought a new Ford F-250 with a 6.9 diesel in 1986.Weak yeah, but very reliable, never gave any problem except occasionally the injector pump would leak fuel from the weep hole at the input shaft which required removal of the pump to replace the seal. After replacing the seal a couple of times I could pull the pump and fix in about 45 minutes my self. The first trip to Alaska we made was in this truck in 1990,I even carried an extra inj pump just in case.We traveled with complete confidence I could fix practically any thing that could happen to that engine. My newer 2005 5.9 cummins is a completely different matter, if it fails all I can do is call the tow truck and get out the check book.Horse power and torque are great but Simplicity and associated reliability can be a comfort also. That old ford truck traveled all 49 states and 7 Canadian Providences with our little truck camper on board without even one break down while traveling. We finally sold it in 2003 it had 490,000 miles o it.
