If Ford only offered the 5.0 as the optional engine and kept the standard 3.5 V6, the F150 would be very competitive to the GM, Ram, Toyota and Nissan V8 equipped 1/2tons powertrain wise. When you add the 2.7eb and 3.5eb and also the 3.0 diesel the F150 platform has an option for everybody and their preference and in all cases the option are either competitive or class leading.
I for one am happy that they offer us so many engine choices.
In my personal opinion though, the 2.7eb and 3.5eb are by far the best "truck engines" they offer for towing and truck duties due to the low end torque they offer. I've owned two 3.5 Ecoboost powered vehicles and they are great truck/SUV engines. Two of my employees own F150's with 5.0's and one with the 2.7eb so i have an idea of how they are in the real world.
The 5.0 in my opinion is good enough to get the job done in the F150 but it is way more suited to the Mustang.
