Ford Diesel 6.0 ????

Looking to buy used diesel truck to tow fiver or TT. Heard lots of issues with the Ford 6.0. I'm assuming these issues were corrected eventually. What year did they stop having issues? I'm seeing a lot of 2006 & up w/6.0. for sale.

Would you buy a fixer upper house? If so then the 6.0 is for you.

    LMAO

Did you ever see " Forest Gump". Follow his advice!
  • The 6.0L issues were corrected in 2008 when they dumped it :B
  • I had a 2007 F350 6.0 that I towed my 35' 5er about 15,000 miles with. Traded it for a 2012 F350 6.7 at about 84,000 miles. Not because I had problems with the 6.0, just that I made the mistake of browsing the new truck lot when in for normal service.
Only problem I had with the 6.0 was a failed cam sensor at about 54,000 miles, fixed under warranty. Otherwise never a problem and towed great.
Friend had a 2003 6.0 that did have problems. One Ford service department replaced the turbo twice before another Ford dealer figured out it was actually injector problems.
  • Save yourself the time and money and buy something else. I tried a Powerstroke and lost
  • In the early days it was guess on what did and did not work to make the 6.0 solid. Now its well known what you do and do not need to do. Some will say they are junk, but I bought a 2006 2 years ago, made the proper repairs and she tows a 14k 5th wheel without issue.

What you will find is the brand loyal that got fedup with the brand, and the brand haters will tell you buy something else. I think its a solid motor once you UN ford engineer it. As for the GM and Cummins, both great motors as well and both have their own versions of issues. Though the ISB 5.9 was a rock its also old and long in the tooth chassis make them less desirable, the ISB 6.7 has had some very annoying issues if you ask fleet owners that rack up the milage on them. The duramax has its own set of quirks and issues.

Oh and I used the 6.0 rep to chew the price down to a steal then. When most with 100-120k miles where going for 22-23k, I bought mine at 16k. CC SRW long bed Lariet with all the bells and wistles.
  • Having owned a problematic 2004 6.0 Ford and spending thousands to try to make it reliable, I eventually had to get rid of it. Yes, you can spend a small fortune to try to minimize disasters but there are too many possibilities to cover...like a recently replaced turbo with 25000 miles on it failing and causing another $5000 in repairs...BTDT...

There is a reason they can be bought cheap...caveat emptor...

But it took another POS Ford 6.7 and two years of frustration to finally figure it out...at least GM and Ram have a warranty...

    Regards

The first year for 6.0 was 2003 and that year and the 2004 were the ones to stay away but they were good after that. I know alot of people that have good luck with the 6.0 later engines. I would not buy a 6.4 engine from what I have followed in the forums.
The real problem here is finding a shop that knows how to diagnose the 6.0 engine. Most shops don't have a clue. Alot of Ford dealers don't have a Powerstroke tech that can work on them with good results. But there are good 6.0 men out there and thats the problem. Finding them.
I only have 7.3 engines in my 3 trucks because I know them in my sleep. If I buy a 6.0 I would also learn more about them as well.
Saying all this I just bought a 1999 7.3 in a F350 drw cc with 157000 miles on it and after a little tlc it is a fantastic truck for low dollars. It had a bad torque converter and I did the work on it so it was a home run for me.

Here is excellent site to research the 6.0

Well with about $5,000 a Power stroke 6.0 may be made into a strong reliable engine. Myself, just choose to quit drinking the Blue Kool-Aid and started drinking Goat juice. I bought a Ram Cummins, have not regretted that decision to this day.
The 2nd gen Cummins had their issues, but it had to do with the VP44 injection pump failing. The fix to prevent this was a better than stock Lift Pump (low pressure fuel pump), these run from about $300 to about $700 depending on volume. If you do loose the VP44, rebuilt units can be bought for between $1,000 to about $1,600.

It is your money and your choice, but you might checkout a couple sites.

    http://www.powerstroke.org/

    http://www.cumminsforum.com/

You will find both the good and bad of both, sorry haven't looked at Dmaxes.

    Good luck on your choice.
