ford diesel guys need your help- update pg 4

I have a 2009 F250 PSD with the 6.4 in it. took it on my first long trip (1300 mi round trip from NC to Disney and back). Ran about 60-75 mph (no speed comments please) the whole way pulling the TT (7000 lbs loaded). No issues going south (straight run out 40 east to 95 south). in Orlando the truck sat for about 3 days without being started up. Got in and the truck did not sound right at all. Pulling out of the campground (no trailer attached), it was a whine like a strain or similar to what you might hear when a gasser is in neutral and you're hitting the gas light and steady. The rpms were not revving up with this and I noticed the boost was on 0. to be fair this was low speed (10-25mph). This lasted for about 5 min then suddenly it stopped and then the truck just sounded rough. the rougher sound to the engine made me think of a gasser w/ a miss needing a tune up.

Head for home 2 days later. The truck still sounded rough but no more of the straining sound. Get all the way back into southern NC just near the border and the truck begins to not feel right. Hitting a hill, I gave it a little more oomph to maintain speed and I would feel a vibration/knocking type feeling through the gas pedal. The truck would struggle a little to respond. This occurred a few times. Sometimes it was with rpm around 2250-2500 and boost around 30. Sometimes it was lower or higher for both. every time it was going up a hill and giving it power. I was in tow mode the whole trip when towing. If I babied the truck a little more and ran around 60 and didn't ask it to maintain speed on the hills it didn't do it. In the last hour of my 12-13 hr ride home it started in with the occasional power loss feelings. didn't catch all of the regens on the trip but it looked to occur close to every 200 miles or so.

to give a little history this truck was having some power loss issues before the trip. it would be going down the highway at speed and feel like someone suddenly grabbed the rear of the truck and pulled it backward to slow me down suddenly. I took it in before the trip but the dealership couldn't diagnose or replicate the issue.

the truck did do the whining thing again for a couple min after sitting in the driveway for the weekend. i do run diesel kleen thru it with almost every tank of gas (the exception is when i run out and need to hit the store). Any thoughts on what the problem is? Thanks.

  • I have to tell you, I'm surprised that when it wasn't running right you just kept going. Often this leads to some VERY expensive repairs.

Looks like the variable vanes in the turbo are sticking.
If you are under 100K miles, take it to the Ford dealer. Will be a warranty repair.

would this take a while to fix? just thinking in terms of needing a rental car or not since this is a daily driver.

It depends on what they find.

Don't disconnect the battery before you take the truck in. It will erase any diagnostic data they will need.
  • Interesting.
We never get any 6.4 issues :R
I didn't see any mileage listed, it might help out the blue oval gang in helping you. Turbo's clogged was a common problem with the post DPF engines and pre DEF engines across the board.

Just a LINK you might find interesting.

    Good Luck

  • drain the water separator monthly, usually very little if anything in it. fuel filter was with last oil change. just now coming up on 5000 mi oil change. pretty religious about these things. bought the truck used about a year and a half ago. it had 32000 mi on it. now it has 63000 miles on it.
