With a 6spd tranny there is not any good reasons to go with a 4.30 axle, especially if it's a 4X4. If you could not get going on a steep hill with a 12K trailer (only time a 4.30 would be slightly better), put it in 4L until you are on flatter ground. OH, wait... it's a auto with a torque converter:S not my 7.3 with the 6spd manual tranny.
Want the effect of a 4.30 with a 3.73, do not pull in OD to increase the rpms and loose 1mpg.
Your son has a very special truck if he's getting that kind of mileage! My 6.2 could only break 12mpg empty commuting during the summer. A 30' airstream would have put it deep into single digits just by hooking it to the hitch!
