This is great to see. There's been talk of these baby diesels back 10+ years so it's nice to see them actually come to fruition.
In a single word, the make or break will be payload. Ram's Ecodiesel was a great idea and seems like a great truck but the ridiculous payload rating makes it virtually useless for anyone who tows and has friends/family. You can have a trailer or people... just not both at the same time.
If Ford can get a good HD 1/2 ton chassis with payload up around 2K they'll sell like hotcakes. Of course, MPGs are important but I have to think it will good news.
I've never been much of a Ford guy but would definitely give one these a look if it fit my needs.
