I worked with the mining industry for decades. A friend of mine was doing some exploration for gold in Indonesia. They had a 4 door long bed Ford truck powered by a 4 cylinder diesel. It had a 6 speed manual trans and a split rear axle and did fine on terrible roads.
You are going to see more of them in the US no doubt. One great thing about the diesels is they cut down CO2 compared to a Gas engine. In light of the current weather conditions in the US that is not a bad thing
