That's because of all the emissions controls that they get saddled with (programming and exhaust after treatment) make them costly to buy and mainatain, ruin some of the mpg benefit, and certainly diminish the reliability I'd argue. Heck, around here, DPFs are walking away regularly. Some jerk crawls under your truck with a sawzall and you're out $10,000 (CDN). A local School bus yard lost dozens.
I used to be a fan of diesel power, but if I was buying new today I wouldn't even consider a diesel as I'm not towing or hauling anything 90% of the time, and if you're not, the don't make sense to won IMO.
I most certainly wouldn't want to own a newer model diesel that was out of warranty, but that's just me. They can tow and haul immense loads, but they just aren't worth to me. Not until they get the emissions garbage straightened out.
