I guess they have limited availability ?If I wanted a loaded 1/2 ton with a diesel and couldn't get it because they put a crapton in fleet XLT's, I would not be happy and Ford would lose a high ATP sale.
So not stupid
We could "what if" all day. Either way, they will lose a sale... either me because I refuse to buy options I don't want, or you because you want a loaded half ton. By refusing to even offer a diesel in a stripped down package, they lose my sale 100% of the time. By not having the exact truck you want right now MAYBE they lose the sale, MAYBE you order and wait or MAYBE you buy one that isn't exactly configured the way you want. Even if everything is equal, they lose the sale 33% of the time.
I'd rather lose 33% of a market than 100% of a market. Again... we are playing "what if" and neither of us know the stakes. Clearly Ford made a business decision and is willing to lose 100% of customers like me. I think that is a stupid decision, but it's not mine to make. GM lost a sale in 2010 because of their decision. Ford wouldn't be a consideration of mine in the future if I have to buy a heavy expensive truck with options I neither want nor need.
