I agree with the timing belt, we bought a VW TDI and at 80k I put a new belt water pump and pullies, OK $350 in parts just to get ahead of the curve.

30K later it blew the belt and destroyed the head, $1,400 in parts later I sold it, even though you could pull down low to mid 40's mpg all the time and above 50 every now and then.
