Are chains really that much better than belts?

One of the first major mods I made to our 2015 Passat TDI was get rid of the chain drive (notoriously flakey) and install a gear driven oil pump. Cost thousands but it's still running today with over 300K kms.

Wonder what is the service life of the belts and how much to replace? Like everything else, you have to factor in the cost of maintenance when buying.
