I think you are taking what he was saying out of context and only seeing and posting what you want to see. You cut ff the beginning of that sentence you quoted earlier. The full quote is.
"Heading into 2018, Ford’s truck marketing manager Todd Eckert tells Automotive News that the 2.7-liter EcoBoost will be the most popular F-150 engine followed by the 3.5-liter EcoBoost."
And here I thought only CNN did deceptive editing. This article was written in August 2017 so what you have here is Ford marketing manager making a prediction for 2018, not saying those are actual numbers like you are claiming.
2018 is the first year that all of the engines(besides the 3.3L) have the new 10-speed which gave them an increase in fuel economy for 2018 making the 2.7L the most efficient engine option since the 3.3L is only available in the 6-speed. In 2017, when this article was writen, only the 3.5L EB had the 10-speed while everything else only came with a 6 speed making them less efficient.
