What is the real deal? You can buy the same vehicle in Japan, it just won't carry the Lexus name. Domestic manufacturers have enough cachet in Japan that they don't need to invent new nameplates for their upmarket models.

I'm a little behind the times. Lexus did become a domestic brand in 2005 and Infinity in 2013.
Acura was going to in 2008 but put it on indefinite hold.
