Is "Voice, Turn By Turn" navigation useless in general? Heck no. I'd rather have you listening to a device -- while driving -- than looking down at your smartphone, your GPS or your map! :)
If you're not a Smartphone person, and you seek directions - then yeah, I'd use it.
One advantage of the in-dash unit is that it will mute the radio when it has something to say. Yeah - you can do that with your iPhone or Android but you have to know something about Bluetooth.
One disadvantage is that the maps *sometimes* come a bit old, a bit outdated. Usually not a big deal but roads change. Last time I looked (2005 or so) it was $150 for a new DVD to update the GPS in the Honda.
