LinkThat's the second Dodge SUV I've seen with a broken front axle. We were on the 4WD road which runs north from Great Sand Dunes NP and found a Dodge Durango with it's front axle looking exactly like that, blocking the road. No obvious reason for the axle either, the road was a little rough but didn't have any drop offs or big rocks. The guy said he'd been waiting 2 hours already for a tow truck. We had to back up a half mile to turn around and go back.But I have to say that those guys pulling that Jeep out need to study vectors. Especially at the end when they were trying to pulling it up that bank. There was no way that was going to work. They needed to get the shovels out and make a ramp.

I remember seeing that video awhile back. Sad what people will do when they don't care about tearing up other peoples' stuff.You missed out on the road going North out of the park. We came in that way years ago. What a fun trip! Camped just outside of the park in the trees in the back of the truck (camper shell). I remember it being a 2wd road once you get off of the sand, had a couple water crossings.

First problem I see time and time again is the guy is using a "tow" strap rather than a "recover" strap. Bad idea... Use the correct tools for the job.Second problem is there is not a lot of IQ in that video. All those guys standing around and not a single shovel. Based on how the Jeep was sitting and the run he got using a "tow" strap I was not at all surprised by the outcome.

That's why I thought there didn't seem to be any reason for the axle break. It just decided that it had enough.Those ah...guys pulling that Jeep out didn't seem to be thinking too well. Once they had the jeep partly pulled over they could have filled in that hole it dug and maybe have driven it out, backwards.

The same thing I said when I first seen it years ago. that Jeep wasn`t coming out in one piece no matter who pulled it out. that mud is like a suction cup holding that Jeep in place. the only way it will come out is with force...and with that something will break! With that, the real problem I see are the idiots in the tow rope`s launch path!!!

It's hard to believe that everyone didn't have a longneck in hand.

the bungee effect only works if lined up straight to the wheels and there is no
large 'up' needed...I dislike that method greatly

Have come across too similar out there and just pass them to break things and
hope they don't hurt themselves or someone else...a broken bungee cord (these
nylon straps) has thousands of pounds of force stored in them

Have a winch might have helped, as they all pull slooooooooooow...

Each hearing that diesel rev up to then take up the slack knew something was
going to break sooner than later...

goes to why I don't help too many out there...will give them a ride to call
for service, nor will leave them without food/water if it is going to be a while

Common sense is not so common...

No shovels, no wood or attempts to spread the load across more surface area, but plenty of idots. Get dirty dig some holes remove some of the force holding you there.

A tree would have been handy to use as a pivot point, but didn't see any in the video...I've never used one of these anchors but they are supposed to be effective as an attaching point for a winch when you;re in a spot where there are no trees or rocks to attach to.

After that axle came out, I'd have pulled the tags for return to MVA and left her right there. Let somebody have her for scrap.

The only person there that had a clue was the cameraman. He was at a safe distance and in the right direction to avoid harm. One guy kept trying to be backed over by the TV.
