You missed out on the road going North out of the park. We came in that way years ago. What a fun trip! Camped just outside of the park in the trees in the back of the truck (camper shell). I remember it being a 2wd road once you get off of the sand, had a couple water crossings.
We were past most of the sand and in some thick trees and over the second water crossing when we came across this Durango. That's why I thought there didn't seem to be any reason for the axle break. It just decided that it had enough.
Those ah...guys pulling that Jeep out didn't seem to be thinking too well. Once they had the jeep partly pulled over they could have filled in that hole it dug and maybe have driven it out, backwards.
