It wouldn't....but the idea is that pulling the truck straight in the direction that the tires roll would have required a lot less force than he had to use to pull it sideways and remove the axle. Note at the end of teh video the right front tire was still in the same spot....it hadn't moved....the Jeep moved because the axle tore out of it.
No I see your point. I just don't see an obvious anchor point. As you mentioned they really needed to get the tires out of the mud.
