With the hubs locked and the dash switch in 2wd the differential and front driveshaft turn but the transfer case is not locked. The only disadvantage is marginally reduced fuel mileage. The advantage is that your 4wd drive engages instantly when you hit the switch, this is a great advantage on driving on alternating road surfaces. You do not get the clunk from the front hubs engaging. Some years of ford trucks would not let you engage the system at speeds above 45 mph and this restriction is removed if the hubs are locked in. You should not drive significant distance in 4wd if there is no slip possible between the front and rear axles. I leave my hubs locked in all winter with no problems, my truck has 250,000 miles on it.
