I tow with a 2012 CC 4x4 with the 6.2 and 3.73. I have only towed the 5th three times (appr 10,000#) and it does super well! One trip was the Cheaha SP in AL and its the highest point in the state. Pulling the mountain was a job for it no doubt. You start off with a very steep, very long incline right off the bat. This was my first time really towing with the truck and 5th and it would have done better im sure if I'd known how to utilize the trans a little better. I should have been in manual mode instead of tow/haul. The other two trips were much better! I have also pulled the gooseneck (22 and a 26ft) with two different tractors on them and it was a terrific experience with power to spare.
I came from an 05 CC 4x4 with the dreaded 6.0 PSD and the transition has been very good. The overall towing experience and the trucks platform are both better. I would be a fibber if I didn't admit that the adjustment was tough. I still miss that diesel sound and low end grunt at times. But, overall as a combo DD and TV I honestly can't complain one bit! The power, very smooth and refined transmission, and lower maintenance/fuel costs are all excellent trade offs. I changed my oil and filters last week at 5k miles and it cost me $42 using all motorcraft oem supplies. It has a lifetime fuel filter per the manual and air filter as needed. That's hard to gripe about.
Now the negative. Shocks suck big time! Already replaced with Bilsteins. I used 5100's up front and 4600's on the rear (due to pin weight and at Bilsteins recommendation) and wow what a improvement in ride and even stability with the 5th on the back.
Next is the rear leafs. They are weak and the truck had basically zero rake and squatted badly. I installed a custom long add a leaf from Kansas City Springs for this. Now I have a nice front to back rake and with the 5th attached it sets roughly 1/2 to 1in higher in the rear and the 5th is nice and level.
Over all I really, really love the truck. It's just the initial adjustment from being in a diesel for years that's taking getting used too. But thats me and nothing to do with the truck or its ability. For anyone like me that only tows about 20-30% of the time, and uses the truck for a DD the reminder should really look at this truck. It's honestly a great and very capable vehicle that can do double duty very well.
Thanks,
Scott
