Ford vehicles---peeling paint?

Have any of you seen this problem? I know there are a lot of Ford tow vehicles out there.

I've been reading around the innerwebs while researching tow vehicles. One big issue that I keep reading about is peeling paint on aluminum components of Ford vehicles. Apparently this is happening on many models over several years, even those that are otherwise in pristine conditions.

The problem is alleged to be (by some) that the aluminum components are contaminated with iron. I'm a little skeptical about that, because apparently the primer coat stays adhered, but the color layer bubbles, and peels away from the primer coat. There are many photos that clearly show what happens.

Apparently Ford is not responsive to complaints, which are often shortly after the bumper-to-bumper warranty is up.

Just interested in input from some folks who don't have a particular ax to grind.

  • We have owned multiple Fords since 1987 and have never had any paint peel problems. Only paint problem at all was silver grey paint on a 1987 Bronco oxidixing after about 8 years of Texas sun. Only paint peeling we have ever had was on three Chevy Express vans for our small business that started peeling badly at 3 years age.
  • Our Explorer had blistering paint on the nose of the hood as well as inside the doors in multiple locations. All were repaired under warranty without any hassle.
  • That's strange, I usually notice that sort of thing (remember how bad GM stuff was?) and I've never seen any of them with paint issues. In fact I usually remark at how nice they look - especially the transparent red colors.
  • We had problems at work with the mid 2000's Fords and peeling paint. They were eventually repaired (poorly) under warranty. Haven't seen or heard anything about recent Fords.
