"Back in the day" of the 7.3L turbo PowerStroke, my SISTER was a member of the development team. At that time they did their cold weather testing at the airport in Bemidji MN. One test was to leave the vehicles out on the runway, parked facing into the wind and left for 12 hours. NO BLOCK HEATERS ! The vehicle had to start on batteries only. It also had to drive away without stalling without stalling within 1 minute. They all passed.
(You would not believe how much snow packed under the hood during this test ! Most of it did not melt even after hours of driving.)
