The 4 wheeled G-class cost well into 6-digits and you see lot of them on California roads used as commuters.
So higher price for 6-wheeler not likely is the factor, especially when you consider "cool" factor.
IMHO something just not clicked with customers and it does happen.
I would compare it to R-class, what is equivalent to 35 mpg diesel wagons that you can't buy in America.
R-class is wagon cross-over, meaning extremely handy vehicle for US family, yet
not appreciated here at all becouse of looks.

The Mercedes G63 was designed for unusual terrain rather than payload. I'm not sure you would be happy how it handled when loaded.
