The 4 wheeled G-class cost well into 6-digits and you see lot of them on California roads used as commuters.
So higher price for 6-wheeler not likely is the factor, especially when you consider "cool" factor.
IMHO something just not clicked with customers and it does happen.
I would compare it to R-class, what is equivalent to 35 mpg diesel wagons that you can't buy in America.
R-class is wagon cross-over, meaning extremely handy vehicle for US family, yet
not appreciated here at all becouse of looks.
