This is the fitting I made up to solve that same problem on our trailer. The copper tube extends down to within a 1/8" to 1/4" of the bottom of the tank. Can now pump an extra 5 plus gals. over what it was before.
I did the same thing on my other 2 trailers but used existing plastic barb fitting and added 2 ft of 1/2" hose to inside, instead of copper. Put a bras bolt/screw in other end to hold down hose to bottom of tank , plus added a bunch of 1/4" holes near the bolt to add to the water intake
