latest update/shopping headache.....
wife and I stopped at the dealer for Ram #1, after sitting in the middle seat for a bit she decided it would be acceptable as long as I get the model with electronic shift on the fly (no floor console).
We then went for a test drive.... The check engine light comes on...dealer says oh, we will run it through service real quick...it's probably something simple...
well we proceed to drive out of the dealer and less than a mile into the test drive the check engine light starts flashing and the truck starts running rough like it's going to die....we start to limp back to the dealer and eventually the truck starts running correctly with the check engine light still lit.
Just great, now I know all of the convincing I did with wifey is out the window...at least on this truck.
Upon our return I tell the dealer we have to do some more thinking to which he replies: "no problem, but you might want to leave a refundable deposit on this truck if you are at all interested since our sister dealership wants to show it to someone later today."
I replied: "go ahead and show it, I'll let the check engine light be my security deposit for now...laughing!"
fast forward to last night, I get a call from him that they ran the truck through the shop and it was a bad coil pack...everything is fine now.
They wanted $36,200 for the truck, I said I was thinking more like $34,200....he called me back and said "his boss" would go to $34,700
now, I think that is a pretty good price and I'm seriously considering going for it, however I have a few concerns with this particular truck and maybe they are non issues, but would appreciate some more feedback from the 6.4 owners
1. this truck has 3.73 gears, which some have said will be fine given my payload and towing needs (~2000 lbs payload including tongue weight, and 6000lb (dry) 7600lb (loaded) trailer weight.
2. this truck is starting out life with some sort of problem, am I foolish to buy it with a problem out of the gate? even though it's supposedly fixed?
3. this truck does not have anti-spin differential. Is that a deal breaker on a truck with 4wd and traction control? Wait, I don't see traction control listed on the window sticker...just stability control..is traction control included in that?? I will not do any off roading, only time I use 4wd is for the snow.
in comparison, the other truck..Ram #2 for about the same price has the following:
1. 4.10's $125 option
2. side step bars (nice to have but not a real necessity)$650 option
3. anti spin diff $325 option
but does not have:
1. chrome package (looks much more like a fleet vehicle whith black bumpers/grill and painted steel wheels) a $850 package
2. back camera and sensors (backup camera is pretty useful to me) a $450 package
so dollar wise they are very similar.
also with the 15's on the lots, are there any updates to the 6.4 motor in the second year of production or even the ram in general that would warrant looking at the 2015's? I did notice the motor was a bit noisy on start up which I have read members on ramforums.com complain about....seems like it's something with the exhaust on the 6.4 but I'm not really sure on that...
too many options causes decision paralysis...any opinions are great appreciated.
