For the weight you don't need 4:10, but too much truck is never an issue. The bigger the truck the more options to grow (larger/heavier trailer) you have. FWIW, a 1 ton truck will give you almost double the payload... Food for thought
I'm not opposed to a 1 ton, but was looking at the coil spring 2500 rear suspension since it's also my daily driver (~70 miles a day) AND ~3000 lbs payload is plenty for me
as far as the electric shift on the fly, it is definetly an option ($245) in any trim including tradesman. it comes standard in SLT.
