Front Contour of TT

Fellow Campers....

I have been looking at TT till my head spins. One thing I have notices is some TT have a pretty much "flat" or vertical from (ie the Rockwood Signature) vs a TT with a "curved" front like the Bullet.

Has anyone have any experience towing both types - "flat" and "curved" and if you could tell me is there really a difference with the curved front.

Travel On!
  • It seems that frontal area is frontal area. For a noticeable improvement in fuel economy, reducing frontal area will help whereas the shape of that area does not. People who tow molded-fiberglass 'egg' trailers such as Scamp (factory direct from MN), Casita (TX), Lil Snoozy (SC), Escape (of British Columbia), Oliver (TN), and Eggcamper (MI) typically get 14 to 17 mpg. The reason is, they are shorter, more narrow, and have rounded edges all around for a more aerodynamic, lower profile unit. Other trailers will yield 10-11 mpg typically, regardless of the front end's shape.
  • If you have to worry about 1 mpg then RV'ing isn't for you. If I checked my mpg every time I went camping I think I'd sell it all and stay at BnB's. Get the one that fits your needs the best and never check you mpg. You'll be a happy camper.

Consensus is that they work, but provide a very small improvement. If you run 200,000 miles a year it will show some savings.

    +1
  • Get the one that has the floor plan that will work best for you.

Don't worry too much about the outside shape...and don't let a dealer tell you that this shape or that shape will tow better or get better mileage.
  • I have had both also and never noticed a difference in MPG.

I have since learned the it is the REAR of the trailer that makes a difference. The closer you get to a "tail" configuration the better the mileage because of reduced drag, but the RV industry has not addressed the issue yet.

  • I suppose the curved front is perhaps a bit more aerodynamic but I have towed both and did not notice any difference; it might also be part of the TT structural design or eye appeal.

Either way it was 10 mpg at 60 mph.
