front hitch

I have had front hitches on 3 Chevs for carrying bikes. I think my current one is a Curt. They simply bolt on - no cutting required.

Our first bike rack had the bikes hanging from the frames. A pain. The bikes swung and bounced even with lots of bungies.

Now we have a Swagman where the bike tires sit in rings and a clamp slides down onto the bike frame. It works great.

Our setup is low enough that headlights are not a problem. Overheating has also not been an issue

We had a front hitch installed by a qualified welding shop and have carried our bikes on the front for years. Two downsides; they bounce around even tho tied down with several bungies and they reflect headlights back into the drivers eyes at night.

I have hauled bicycles on front ends of vehicles starting in 1974 Ford Pickup, then a 1984 Dodge Van, then a 1995 Dodge Cummins, and since 2003 on a Dodge Dually Quad Cummins. The hitch is from Hidden Hitch. It also serves as a tie down for two kayaks that ride on the roof of the dually.

We use a Curt front mount hitch and a Swagman XC bike rack on our GMC 3500. Zero issues with cooling, drove 600 miles one way to Florida in 90° heat and engine stayed at normal temps. Going on five years with our set up.

FWIW, I used this hitch (on a different vehicle) for about 9 years as my "move lots of trailers around in a crowded spot" accessory. Probably overloaded it a time or 20. Quite happy with this hitch and it's usability and durability.


Only carried "stuff" on front a few times and for a couple hundred miles (and in Alaska)....hitch rack with coolers, bike rack,etc. Engine and transmission temps went up enough to be noticed, but not to the critical stage.

..again however, infrequent use, short duration, and in Alaska where I'd be surprised if a road trip experienced higher than 65 deg. F ambient temps.

Swagman has a bike rack that installes over the receiver hitch. Maybe that would work.
