Diesel engines last longer ONLY if you mean the block and even then there are numerous people having to have very expensive repairs ($5,000 to $8,000) on Duramax engines with injector repairs, head gasket repairs, Ford 6.0 with multiple engine parts failing) with fewer than 100k miles on the engine. Diesel powered trucks still have battery and electrical problems and cooling system problems and transmission problems and emission control system failures, and these are all very expensive to repair.
I can have a V8 gas engine completely rebuilt for what a new set of injectors costs for a diesel engine. No way are diesels cheaper to operate for pickup truck owners. Diesels produce more torque for faster acceleration and the engine braking is great but it comes at with a big price and it would be naive to think otherwise.
Part of the price of having a diesel powered truck is that I have to include in my route planning where I will be able to find a station selling diesel. Most small towns only have gas available at the pumps.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on a number of points. I have owned big block gassers. Ford 460 in a F350 CC SRW. When it came to the 6% grades common here in AZ and Ca. It really was not up to the task. The climb outside Palm Springs saw 30 to 35 MPH pulling a small toy hauler. (21 foot) no toys inside. 4 to 5 MPG. Average Phoenix to San Bernardino and back 8 MPG. Was working very hard.
Your cost estimates for diesel repairs are picking the worst possible situations. The for 6.0? who would buy it? Unless it already has all the upgrades just stay away.
I have a 1999 F550 with a 7.3. Bullet proof. You can't even come close to rebuilding a V8 gasser for what a set of injectors cost for that motor. They can be had for under $100.00 each. Unlike the Duramax injectors at $400.00 each.
Fuel cost in AZ is now about .10/gal higher than reg gas.
Bought the truck used for $7K. Had to change out an alternator. $280.00. At 235K miles chances are the same with a gasser. There is no comparison hauling with my gasser and the power stroke.
The diesel vs gas debate will go on forever. I have owned both and each has it advantages but for what I do the diesel is the only way to go. My decision was not made by cost but right tool for the right job. Imagine my surprise when my costs were comparable.
I still have a F150 gasser for fun. 94 Lightning. freshly rebuilt short block for $2800.00. 351 with Vortech supercharger. Don't tow for sh**, don't want to know the mileage and usually burns premium but sure is fun to drive.
