Fuel Question... diesel and gas

Standards for gasoline motor fuels started becoming more strict, and more strictly enforced, in the 1970s. The Federal government started getting involved with defining formulations once they realized that the fuel was as important for emissions control as the technology applied to control systems on the engines.

That there is a standard composition and quality for diesel motor fuels is a relatively new idea, almost early 21st century. At one time it was just the same distilled product, with a general weight range, as fuel oil for heating. It could be good, or it could be dirty, and not much attention was paid to storage and handling.

Emissions control for diesel engines, and the engine technology to accomplish that, has resulted in tighter standards for diesel motor fuel, so it is not necessarily the same stuff as fuel oil today. It is more like "fuel oil plus." That has made the motor fuel more expensive, but you should now expect the same quality control as for gasoline motor fuels, although not every fuel distributor can be closely watched all the time. There is still bad gas out there too.

Hey I spun a Detroit backwards once upon a time when learning to drive. Care to guess what year? Hint.... it was a cab-over Pete hauling belly dumps ( which didn't release from the cab half the time)

I'm 13 yrs younger, had diesels twice minimum as long. First was 89 or there abouts..........I'm sure a few ran them before this on here. That time and before was a whole different arnimal when it came to deezals.......1/3 to 1/4 the HP and half the torque at best for equal sized motors. Black smoke, no turbo sometimes...... IHC used to use new V8 designs as gas rigs before turning them into diesel designs......oh the differences in motors back then......

No, first diesel I had was an 01' Chevy D/A....first one using the ULSD was an 07.5'...but you are correct..I've only owned diesels about 14 years...."young punk"?...dang....don't feel young:)...(be 65 in July:)).......

Was you first diesel a 2007,5? If so, your a young punk when it comes to diesel....... you don't know what it was like with them no steenkin turbo 8l motors putting out a whopping.g 120 mouse power! You needed additives in them days or the.vs had issues.

I don't, and have never had a problem....That covers from an 07.5 Chevy D/A using ULSD till now...I got almost 30,000 on this truck, never a drop of additive, no issues....
