Fueling a diesel truck

When I add fuel to our new to us diesel truck at our local Shell station the stations diesel fuel pump is "very" slow, the regular gasoline pumps are working ok. Is it normal for the diesel pumps at fuel stations to run slow?

  • I always avoid the high flow pumps as I get the feeling that the filtering being done is much less than a standard pump. I also don't find it necesary to have my feet stick to the pavement from fuel being spilled. JMO:B BTW the flow should be about the same as a gas pump.
  • I had a similar problem at a Shell station near my home. The diesel was flowing at about one gallon per minute. I told the clerk and his response was that it was a known issue. I tried it again several weeks later and it hadn't changed. I wonder what's growing in their pump, tank and filters.
  • Nope.

First of all, you need to know that diesel pumps come in two flavors. There are ones that have small nozzles and low flow rates that are known as "auto diesel" and are used by folks driving diesel cars, such as VW TDI Jettas and Golfs, as well as BMWs and Mercedes, that have small tanks and fill quickly even at low flow rates.

Then there are the ones with larger nozzles intended for big trucks. These guys have 150 to 300 gallon tanks to fill and for whom time is truly money. The flow rate on those pumps will overflow a Jetta 16 gallon tank in seconds.

Now it may or may not be that the particular pump at which you pulled up has specific problems. But unless you were at a truck pump, you are never going to see high flow rates. Think about it: diesel stinks, and the first time some guy in a suit, or a gal in an expensive frock for that matter, finds him/herself soaked head to toe in diesel because the pump flow was so high it sprayed out before they could take their hand off the nozzle, the station owner is going to hear about it in very unpleasant fashion.

Try a different station...they need to replace their filters.

X3 diesel normally runs pretty quick, but it may also seem slower that new Ram has a 35 gallon tank if it is a long bed!

32 Gallon! Had to make room for the DEF tank! However his 2012 should be 35.

Let the manager know what's going on as they may not know.

  • I find the diesel pumps to be faster. It's possible that their filters were plugged and needed replacing.
