I disagree on DEF cost. My trip to Kansas and back was $.0075 - much closer to a real penny than your data.
Were you towing? If not, then you either use way to much DEF(and have an underlying issue), get horrible fuel mileage, or paid way to much for a gallon of DEF.
The standard usage for DEF is between 50 to 1 and 60 to 1 meaning one gallon of DEF for every 50-60 gallon of diesel should be used if the system is operating correctly. Round trip from Michigan to Kansas is roughly 2,000 miles. If you got 18 mpg on the highway, then that would mean you used 111 gallons of diesel. Divide that by 50 and you get 2.22 gallons of DEF used the whole trip. At $2.97 per gallon at the pump, that would come out to $6.60 for DEF over the course of 2,000 miles. Divide $6.60 by 2,000 miles and you get $.0033 cents per mile.
I haven't needed DEF since 2016 and that was the last time I checked prices. So while I am a little short with my $.001-.002, I am not that far off and it is still not enough to make much of a difference. If the reason why yours is much higher because you are paying the $12-15$ for the 2.5 gallon DEF jug($4.80- $6.00 per gallon), then that is user error for paying too much for old DEF.
There is a Love's the next town over from you that sells DEF for $2.97 at the pump.
