FWC Hawk - Roof Solar Build ?

I am considering solar panels on the roof of a Hawk. I've, on paper, put four 100 watt panels on the roof (80" x 128"). My thought was that I could mount them on the crossbars of the full-length Yakima rails. It even looks like if they were mounted this way you might be able to open the vent(s).

Do you think having them mounted to the Yakima Rack Crossbars that they would be damaged in the wind while driving, since they wouldn't be mounted directly to the roof, but a few inches off the roof?
  • Thanks DWeikert, good read, helpful. It gave me some additional thoughts. I can probably mount the panels nose down, front under the bar, rear over the bar. I think the bar would be over the frame of the panel, not light obscuring. That puts pressure on top of the panels while driving, and I can add a deflector (Yakima offers them). If I point the truck south when parked that puts the panels in a slightly better position for sunshine. It wouldn't always be pointed in the most efficient direction, necessarily, depending on campsite selection. I can see me putting the truck north/south though if having the choice so that there is less direct sunlight through the windows. Hmmm...this seems like a fun experiment.
  • Another thing I thought about was putting the panels on the underside of the cross bars, which will put the panels maybe two inches off the roof. With a deflector or two I should be able to keep wind at a minimum. Thanks for that suggestion.
  • A deflector seems too easy :) Should have been my first thought. Thanks.
  • A pragmatic approach: put a deflector(s) on the leading edge. Conventional installations leave a small gap but mounting as high as you are considering doing may put quite a bit of air under them and set up vibration or other damaging lift.
400 watts! Very nice. Please continue to post and include pictures.
