Other than the fact that they both have 8 cylinders and 6.6 liters of displacement, they are completely different animals. - Curly2001Explorer III wonder if the "new" 6.6 gasser is similar to the old Pontiac 6.6 ltr. gas engine?

That 6spd has probably cost them a sale to me. I’ve got an early 6.0 that has been a great truck, but it does struggle with our camper. I held off on buying a truck for 2 years to see what the new one had to offer. I’d checked out the Ram 6.4 in case my truck died, and read about their gear selection issues, then when the Chevy 6.6 came out I was disappointed that it had the 6spd.
After reading forums and watching reviews everyone is raving about how much improvement the 8spd made in the Ram, and I’m beginning to hear things about the Chevy 6spd year selection.
I test drove both last week, and the Ram 8spd felt much better, and I liked the interior better. I really wanted to love the Chevy since my current one I’ve had for 17 years, and 238k miles of reliable service. I feel guilty leaving Chevy, but at this point I will probably go with the Ram.
I could have written this myself.
Go drive the Ford 10 speeds also.
I have been with GM for 30 years...that may be coming to an end.
Bill, I believe you will miss the better ride of a GM HD truck vs a Ford. I also find the ergonomics on the GM’s to be nicer. Good luck. - wowens79Explorer III

I’ve been trying to avoid looking at that new 7.3 gasser. I’m afraid it may add another truck into the mix. - billtexExplorer II

My other question would be is that the same 6 speed transmission used on the 6.0 engine and if so, is it beefy enough for the new 6.6 engine? If so, that tells me it is a pretty stout tranny, too.

My understanding is that it is a beefed up version on the old 6spd - Curly2001Explorer IIMy other question would be is that the same 6 speed transmission used on the 6.0 engine and if so, is it beefy enough for the new 6.6 engine? If so, that tells me it is a pretty stout tranny, too.

Considering that the engine was just introduced for the 2020 model year, and didn't hit the lots until after the camping season was pretty much over, and it's currently JANUARY, I sincerely doubt there are many with towing experience yet. After Memorial Day you'll likely find a lot more feedback.
What do you mean camping season is over??? It’s 60 and sunny in Georgia today. I normally winterize 3-4 times because we’ll head out on pretty weekends.
