Gas engines in school buses coming back?

Just thought I' d post something a lil different.

Got local school budget info and just like everything else in NYS, bigger budget. One item that caught my attention tho is bus purchases. Seems that they want to buy a few (as they do every year), but spec them w/gas engines. They cite how they are cheaper than diesels and all. IMO, they are in no way as good or efficient as diesel motors. In fact, don't recall seeing any large vehicle (except a RV) with a gas motor in eons.

What do all the motorheads here think?

  • I have often wondered about this. IMO it would depend on the route the bus does daily. If it's in town, flat and just stop to stop, I see no reason a gas engine wouldn't suffice. If it does highway mixed with inclines and rural areas, maybe a diesel would be better. I live near a school bus garage in a town that services two school districts. In anything colder than about 40 degrees, someone comes in and starts the buses an hour before they leave the yard....that can't be cheap on fuel.I am curious as to how many miles they rack up before they are retired, although I think a diesel would be cheaper in the long run with high miles I see a lot of school buses at auction with less than 100k.

Maybe they're only considering the initial purchase price of the gas engine?
  • Here in Colorado they buy a lot of buses that run on propane. The poor diesel engine is being killed by emissions.
