Gas mileage with a Truck Camper

Right now, I tow a small 5th wheel with my GMC. Without trailer, I average 15-16 mpg usually.....down to 9.5-10 with the trailer.

Truck campers kind of fascinate me, so I was thinking I might pick up a used one, not too heavy just for travelling. Am wondering, how your mileage with your truck camper affects your truck? I know there still is a larger frontal drag, so was thinking about a pop up TC

I have seen mileage threads for trailers on here, but cant remember seeing a truck camper one.

What are your mileage experiences with and without the camper?

  • poncho, your mileage with the trailer will be almost identical with a standard camper. Your question should be a little more specific for pop ups if that's the way you think you might go.
  • With our truck empty, at 75 mph we get about 18mpg. With the TC at 75 it drops to about 11, but we can get 13 to 14 if we keep the speed to around 65.
  • Moved from a Lance 981 to a 28' TT a couple of years ago and noticed little if no difference in the mileage between the TC and the TT.
  • Little over 12 here. It stays about the same whether we are towing boat or bike trailer.
  • 2003 F-250 4x4.

    Coachman 9.5' cabover.

Empty truck if I behave with the speedo I get about 18.

Truck and trailer I get about 16.

Truck, trailer and camper i get a consistent 10.

Truck and camper, no trailer, .. i still get 10. ;)
  • I have a 2015 Chevy 2500, long bed, 4X4, crew cab.
    I get 15 MPG empty.

With my 2008 Northstar 8.5 Arrow mounted I get a sickening 8 to 9 MPG.

If I pull my bass boat I drop to 8 MPG.:(
