Gas tow vehicle for fifthwheel

I am currently looking to trade our 40' diesel pusher for a 2016 Montana fifthwheel. With that comes a new tow vehicle. Even though I've owned several diesels, I'm leaning to a gas burner. I looking at a 2015 gmc 3500 srw with the 6.0 gas engine and 4.10 axle ratio or a 2015 f350 srw with 6.2 gas engine and 4.30 axle ratio. I only tow approx.1,500 miles a year and the other 14,000 miles a year will be as a daily driver. Of these two, which one will do the job better and which one is more reliable?
  • As requested no comment here :B Just kidding! That Ferd will pull your new Montana much better IMO. Then you have a 6.4...... ahhhh forget it. Once under the bus is enough :W
  • Do some searching around if you lean to the 6.2 Ford. I got the 4.30 diffy in mine and if I had it to do over again I would have gotten the 3.73. Reason, the 3.73 in 5th runs about the same R's as the 4.30 does in 6th.

So when towing I would be running 5th gear and with all the grocery getting (which is most of my driving) i would run in 6th and keep the R's down and the horses eating less hay.
  • My last truck was a 2012 Silverado 3500 SRW 6.0 gas with 4:10. It did a respectable job towing my 12,000 lb fiver. If you plan on towing in Hills, I would not recommend anything heavier with this truck. My brakes would also get very hot on steep declines.
On the other hand I now have a diesel and couldn't be happier. The engine brake is awesome.
It comes down to choice and how much you want to spend.
Montanas are drop frame fivers (full profile) and don't think there are any with gvwrs under 12k.
  • Both really dependable and great engines and great trucks.

IMHO I would pick the Ford. The 6.2 is just a really, really good engine.
  • I had a Chevy HD with a 6.0 and now have a F250 with the 6.2. The F250 is a better TV but it is newer 15 vs. 03 so the comparison is not really fair. The F250 also has a much better 6 speed vs. 4 speed in the HD. I went with a Ford this time because I couldn't find a middle trim line in the Chevy with the 6.0. They were either the work truck and white or an over the top LT with leather. I bought an XLT with everything I wanted. Both trucks are fully capable you will need to drive and see for yourself which one fits you better. GO SOX!
  • The 6.2 has 385HP & 405TQ, tow rating 15.3+K

    The 6.0 has 335HP & 380TQ, tow rating 13.9K

On paper the 6.2 will out perform the 6.0. Both are a proven and reliable platform.
  • Are you moving form CG to CG or just moving to one location and back again?
Reason I ask is it would be cheaper to pay someone to move it and get a small car/truck for the other 14,000 miles.
