Gasoline Auxiliary Fuel Tank Questions

Anybody use an auxiliary tank or larger after market tank to replace your factory tank for a gasoline engine? What type do you have and brand? I'm also curious about the ease of installation. Thanks

  • I have a 55 gal on mine. It replaces the original tank (why don't manufacturer's offer one like that as an option?). Sorry don't know the brand. One thing is the gas gauge is of a little and when the overhead says I have 20 miles to empty I really have about twice that much.
  • I use a Handy Tank in our gas truck Handy Tank this is the 3rd truck it's been mounted in. I use a Holly rotary vane pump to pump into the main tank when fuel is needed.

  • I have a TransferFlow. Works VERY good. I would buy another again. I would highly recommend it. And it uses stock fuel gage. I went from 28 to 48 gal.

I got a 80 gal RDS, made in Perry, FL. Plumbed it with a manual ball valve at the tank and a solenoid valve with viton seals just under the bed into the filler neck. The RDS has a rollover vent in the top and I ran it to the vent line in the filler neck.

This setup has been working fine for over 3 yrs. I had a 100 gal L-shaped tank in my old truck. Kept having trouble with the seals in the solenoid valves. Make sure you get the viton seals.

Back in the days of non-moonshine gasoline, DuPont Viton was the gold standard of elastomers for gasoline service. That elastomer is now designated as Viton-A, and it is not the best for EtOH blended gasoline. Now there are multiple specifications for Viton and I would recommend at least Viton GFLT for gasoline service, especially with the EPA threatening to force E15 on us.

  • There are VERY few gas approved transfer tanks, and I have not seen any gas replacement tanks. Years ago the rumor was it had something to do with the EVAP systems..
  • I don't think you can buy them leagally for gas any more. In the 80s vehicles could be ordered with extra tanks. Or fabricators would build and install them. If you look at extra tanks now they indicate "diesel only". I suppose you could have one built and install it yourself. A shame but the old days are gone forever.
