Gasoline Mileage improvement after break in.

This is the first vehicle that I have ever owned, and I have owned many, that actually improved its fuel mileage a lot after the first 5,000 miles. It is a Silverado 2500HD with the 6.0 gasoline engine and the mpg has gone up from an average of about 14 to 16 mpg. I realize that diesels keep getting better and better, the more times this question is asked, but this is my first gasser to do this. Dealers used to promise this kind of result, but I was beginning to think that they might be misleading me.

  • That is good, I had a 2012 Ram 2500 Hemi with 3.73's and the best I ever got hand calculated was an average of 13 mpg's. The 34 gal fuel tank was very appreciated.

I think if you really get down to the brass tacks of the situation and if you put the engine on a dyno and check out the BSFC you will find out an engine improves VERY, VERY, VERY little in F/E over time.

What does improve is how a person learns to drive the new truck or car.

Several stages of owning a new truck.

#1. Lets see what this puppy can do! This thing goes good!

#2. Lets tow with it sane like and if I have to floor it once in a while and waste a little fuel so be it.

#3. I'm over this power trip. I just want to get good fuel mileage.

The 3 steps above are what people are seeing with improvement in F/E over time.

Probably a little truth in that, though I have set the cruise on 62 every since the first five hundred miles. I do like to keep up with, or ahead of, traffic around town. I also found out I get better mileage without the ethanol, but that is hard to find in Illinois.

  • My GM 6.0L steadily improved over the first year/21k miles. I got it in October and got about 12mpg all the first winter. Took at 2600 mile trip starting at 6500 miles and got 15mpg. 7 months/10k miles later took a 1000 mile trip and got 17.7mpg. And now I can get as high as 20mpg @ 65mph non towing. I'm very impressed with the combination of performance and fuel efficiency.

  • Tom - I'm hoping that is true. I just purchased a 2103 F150 Ecoboost. Just completed the first tank and had 24 highway / 19.5 combined. If that gets any better, I won't be able to stand it.

My mechanic, also a neighbor, told me to expect it get better as it "breaks in" up to about 10K miles. Sure hope he's right......
