Gasoline Transfer Tank.

Have any of you gas monkeys added a gas transfer tank so you don't have to stop every 200 miles or so when towing?

I know auxiliary tanks are a no go for gas, but it would be nice to just be able to pull off and top off from an on board tank instead of having to exit and find a gas station to navigate.

Where I am it would be especially nice since gas stations can be as much as 100 miles apart.

  • I think that the folks that use the "illegal" word on gas aux tanks do it based on urban legend.

If plumbed properly they fit the bill same as diesel.

I challenge anyone that uses that word to show me some information (official type) that backs it up besides web site ramblings.

Lets leave California out of this.

Slow down and get better mileage? I get 6 mpg doing 70 and 11-12 mpg doing 55 (towing).

Almost double the range with only a small reduction in speed, no mods nessecary.

I appreciate your concern, but I don't tow over 60.

I bought something similar to this photo a few years ago..

This one currently $175 HERE (bought mine for half the price as new old stock..)

I mounted mine to a couple of 2x6s to give the tank stability from rolling over. Then added in a electric fuel pump like this..

    and a fuel filter.

Plug into 12V cig power socket and pumps the tank out in about 10 minutes..

Whenever we pull into a rest area we put the nozzle into our tank filler, flip the pump switch and we now have 150 more miles to be able to tow :)

With our truck tank of 35 gallons and the small 15 gallons tank we now can drive nearly 500 miles without seeking a gas station :B

Makes for a lot less short hops on some of our normal routes often cutting out 4 fuel stops, less stops = less time = happy campers..

Depending on your vehicle there may be a larger fuel tank available that replaces the OEM tank exactly. I did that on a Blazer some years ago.
  • For years we had auxillary gas tanks. In fact they were so popular Ford & GM offered them in their PUs. I think the aux tanks were better than transfer tanks which are only legal for diesel only. If I went back to towing 5er or TT I think I would have a tank built for my PU bed and have a valve that tapped into my filler neck. Illegal I suppose but it is a PITA stopping every few miles for gas. MHs carry about 80 gallons of fuel so it isn't the amount of fuel carried.Mostly everyone today is afraid of being sued and smog testing.
