GD Imagine 2970RL Towed with F150?

Hi all,
Just joined. We are looking at getting a Grand Design TT. We really like the 2970RL & the 2670MK. The problem and question is can I safety tow either one with my truck? 2017 Ford F-150 Super Crew, 6.5 Bed, Max tow package, 3.5 Eco boost, 10 Speed transmission. The combines weight rating is 171000 lbs GVWR 7000 With a payload of 2042 lbs.
I use the truck for business and we will be moving to NC with it. The truck is loaded with equipment so this is one of my concerns. I scaled it today. I can take some thing out but I scaled it with all equipment, luggage, wife, Dog etc and I'm at 6280 lbs. Front 3220 lbs - Back 3060 lbs.
The 2970 UVW is 7324 lbs Tongue 795 lbs.
So I'm not worried about the length. I have not towed anything this long but I did have a 26' boat for many years. I've never worried to much about weight before.
Does anyone have a similar set up?
Any input would be great.

Have to account for the 5th wheel hitch also!!!!! Chris
Why would you want a 5th wheel hitch with a Travel Trailer?????
  • Something seems off with 7k GVW, 2k specified payload, and loaded up at 6280 pounds. You have 700 pounds of payload for loaded TW. That is maybe 5k dry TT. If you can take 500 pounds out of the truck and put it in the trailer, you'd be all set.

Still, 8000-8500 pounds is the high range of half ton owner's comfort based on RV forum feedback. Get a WDH with integrated sway control and learn how to adjust it.
  • By my calculation based upon the information you provided, you have about 1300 lbs more stuff in that truck than when it left the factory. Take out about 700 lbs of that stuff and you'll be able to tow that trailer.
  • I have the older (heavier) steel body truck with Max Payload that has heavier axels and springs. With this I tow an 8000 loaded trailer 30’ long. I am within all specs and it works well.

Let’s look at your numbers quick like.

    GVWR 7000 - 6280 = 720 payload available.
Trailer loaded will come in at 8500+.
Tongue weight will be at around 1100+.

With this trailer you would be over payload and rear axle ratings. I would shop around for a smaller trailer.

And good job asking before you bought the trailer.

    Good luck,
    Stu
