I am driving in direct. 4th on the 5 speed is 1.00:1 in third I turn 3500 at 55 mph, so going down another gear is out of the question.
After all the posts I have decided to go 4.11 gears.
Thanks everyone for your responses, I will update when I change the gears, but I have to save up my pennies first, so it may be a while.
Well that is a lot of trailer I guess for the engine.
In places going to the Pacific we would grind for like like an hour in second gear around 4000 RPM but that was a 454 TBI with less weight perhaps (under 15K total) and still we were passing a lot of semi rigs because that put us at 50 MPH in second gear. We came down in second sometimes too. From exit to exit in Yosemite we were in 1 or second all the way. What surprised me was even taking the Old Priest Run going in we still hit 5 MPG that tank. On the down side the foot was off the gas pedal most of the time unless I was downshifting so that was like 1 gallons per hour.
Do update us. Getting the right gearing will make it pull better.
