Generac 2000??????

Im kicking around the idea of a suitcase generator but find it hard to swallow the $1000.00 price tag for a Honda. Generac has the 2000 for under $500 at Tractor Supply. Is anyone using this generator and how do you like it?

You may find it hard to swallow the price tag of the Honda, gut I bet you really gag from the noise of the Generac.

I bought my Honda in 2004. It would not start in 2005. Took it to the shop, they poured the gas out which had water in it. Added new gas, it started right up. It has done this three or four times since then. I dumped the gas and added new, and it starts right up. One time I had to clean the carb due to letting it sit.

Last week at a small engine shop, I was picking up fuel tubing for a project. I ask the guy what was the most common repair they did to small engines. He said no question, it is almost always fuel related. He said at least 95% if the repairs was fuel. He went on to say water and residue from ethanol. The point here is no small gas engine is exempt from having water in the gas and it is very difficult to avoid ethanol.

Of all the repairs to Hondas I read about on RV.NET, I do not remember any that was not fuel related.

If you have no problem with noise, a contractor type (open frame) is fine. If you are concerned with noise, size and/or weight, go with Honda or Yamaha. If you are concerned with Repair parts and/or shops, go with the Honda.

If you are absolutely sure you only want to run your charger, and never run anything else, go 1000 watt.

If you want to run other things, and have a faster resale some day, go 2000 watt.

If weight is no problem, you insist on electric start, and/or run an 13200 btu or larger A/C, go bigger than the 2000 watt.
  • Honda eu3000 since 2005 zero problems. Super quiet. I have no regrets

I ordered my 2KW Honda Generator in 2008 for $850 from Mayberrys. It arrived the next afternoon. Serviced it and made a secure spot for it in the tail gate corner of my Truck which is using a folding hard plastic bed cover. It has sit there every since. When I need to use I can pull it out on to the dropped tail gate. It is always out of sight when not being used.

The Honda generator starts almost every time on the first pull. I have had ZERO problems with it and the only maintenance has been to change the oil at the start of each season. My generator never goes more than a week without being run for something all year long...

My first trip out with my Honda generator had me going for a short period without being able to keep it running for more than a few minutes... I fiddled with it, a few passer bys looked at it. Even drained the fuel thinking bad gas. Then one guy comes up and looks at it says lets try it now - Fired right up and kept running. I had closed the fuel cap lever and forgot to open it back up. The guy said that will be fifty dollars - I say check will be in the mail hehe By then I had run out of time allowed to run my generator so had to sneak it a couple of hours over the allowed run time restriction hehe...

My generator is really only used to re-charge my big battery bank each day as we run all of our 120VAC items we want to run from an inverter setup and all of the 12VDC items directly from the battery bank. This is all planned to drop my battery bank down to its 50% charge state by 8AM the next morning when I run my 2KW Honda generator to re-charge the battery bank back up to its 90% charge state using on-board smart mode charging technology. Very seldom do we ever just run the whole camper off the generator for long periods of time.. It usually not allowed at the places we go to here on the East side of the us anyway. Running off the batteries is silent running.

Since my generator goes with my truck it gets used for everything. I really don't know how I have done without one in the past. It is used from working in the yard, camping runs, helping out someone with a run down battery in a Walmart Parking lots (sometimes this include me), and providing power for my house fridge and a couple of long 120VAC extension cord drops in the house during the previous two years week long power outages at home from a hurricane.

I also carry my Black and Decker VEC1093DBD 40AMP smart mode portable battery charger in my truck tool box... They go hand in hand... generators and battery chargers...

Just yesterday while coming out of WALMART there was the sad looking older lady standing next to her car with the hood up... Put a big smile on her face in only a few minutes...

When camping we always are the last ones leaving the camp ground as we are never in any real hurry breaking camp. I bet we have provided ten or more quick battery recharges over the years... Just takes a few minutes getting enough charge back into their batteries to allow them to start up again on their own. Also allows us to sit and chat drinking a good cup of good fresh made bean coffee we always have with us...

One of my better PLAN B setups...

  • I have worked on them. Buy a Honda or Yamaha. So you are sure that 1600 watts will fill your needs?
  • That is enough for me. so now im heading towards the Yamaha. Size wise it might be the best, although I do like the Honda.
    Thanks

I purchased one prior to getting my Yamaha. I was convinced the price didn't make a difference. I brought it home, followed the instructions and when letting it idle for 5-mins it began leaking oil out of it's breather hose and then it seized.

Personally I have owned both a Honda and a Yamaha, either one is worth it IMO. I could have had a "freak" one, however when I dropped mine off for "repairs" the shop had 10 of these units in the back being repaired. Right then I asked for a refund and when down to the next store and got my Yamaha.
